Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have recycled more than 2,500 metric tonnes of old and unwanted electronics since the Electronic Products Recycling Association (EPRA) launched in 2013.
The program director of the EPRA says that’s equal to about 227,000 devices, including televisions, computers, tablets and audio visual equipment. Terry Green says that’s a significant amount of e-waste being diverted from landfills.
In 2015 alone, ERPA hosted 25 special collection events in rural and remote areas of the province which contributed to a 23 per cent increase in the amount of the end-of-life electronics collected over the previous year.
Green says they have been able to reduce fees since the introduction of the program through economy of scale on transportation costs.
