    (St. John’s: July 17, 2017)

Cricket Newfoundland and Labrador hosts the Eastern Canadian Senior Cricket Championships starting next Friday in St. John’s, the first inter-provincial cricket matches in the province since the 1890s. The tournament takes place July 21-23, and will feature Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI and Quebec (last year’s champions).

Newfoundland & Labrador take on New Brunswick in the opening match at 8 am on Friday morning, play Quebec at 2pm Friday, Nova Scotia 2 pm on Saturday, and PEI at 8 am on Sunday. The final will be held at 2 pm on Sunday.

All matches will be played at RCAF field, RCAF Road, St John’s (off Torbay Road), on a new purpose built pitch, constructed thanks to financial assistance from Cricket Canada and a grant from the provincial government; support of the City of St. John’s, NL Sports Centre Inc. & St. Johns Airport Authority was also essential in completing the construction.

Cricket Canada president Ranjit Saini says:- “This year’s tournament is a celebration as Newfoundland and Labrador will be hosting their first such event. This is a major milestone in a very young organisation’s life. I fully remember when Newfoundland & Labrador became a member of Cricket Canada and since then the association has evolved into a very successful cricket group. We at Cricket Canada take this opportunity to wish you all the very best, a great time and a very successful event. “

Tournament chair Gurman Khurana says:-“We are excited to host the other provinces in our home town of St. John’s. This is a great opportunity to show the other teams & Cricket Canada that our organization can execute an event at this scale. We are very appreciative of the support we have received from the local community for this event and makes us feel proud to be part of this province. We’re very grateful to the provincial government for a hosting grant that has helped us accomplish this”.

Spectators are welcome and there is no admission charge.
