  • Apollo Out for Another Day Due to Ice Conditions

The Coast Guard icebreaker the George R. Pearkes is on its way to the Straits to assist the Apollo which has been prevented from operating between St. Barbe and Blanc Sablon by extreme ice pressure.

The ferry is unable to sail again today.

Trevor Hodgson of Coast Guard Atlantic Ice Operations says winds in the area have caused some problems.

He says strong winds have packed the ice into the St. Barbe area under pressure, prompting a ice pressure warning.

Hodgson says the icebreaker is expected to arrive on the scene tomorrow.

He says icebreakers are deployed on a zonal basis, and the George R. Pearkes is tasked to Search and Rescue and ice out of Corner Brook. It will arrive on the scene tomorrow as the ice pressure is expected to ease. Hodgson says the vessel would not be able to assist the Apollo under extreme ice pressure.
