  • Autism Society NL to Build Year-Round Greenhouse

The Autism Society of Newfoundland and Labrador is going to build a $300,000 solar-powered, year-round greenhouse.

The CEO of the Autism Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, Scott Crocker, says the addition will triple current greenhouse production and output, and will also create three new year-round positions and four new seasonal ones, most of which will be for adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Crocker says projects like these are important for people with ASD. He says the goal is to do whatever they can to get people with ASD out working.

Delia Warren, the director for Iron and Earth East, says it will not be built like an ordinary greenhouse.

She says the greenhouse will be a more permanent structure and that it will be built into the hillside to add more insulation, making it even more energy efficient.

Meanwhile, Warren says Iron and Earth is looking to get more people involved in the solar industry. She says they are looking to do that through the Solar Skills Training Initiative.

She says they are looking to provide training for people who wish to learn how to install solar technology. They have held two training sessions in St. John’s over the last year and a half.
