The Motor Registration Division in Mount Pearl is closed tonight for fumigation after a bed bug was found in the building late last night.
An internal email provided to VOCM News indicates that a staff member had been identified with bed bugs, and an investigation of the premises located one such insect near the janitorial area.
Minister of Service NL, Sherry Gambin-Walsh says it’s being treated as a minor incident as only one bed bug was located. Members of Occupational Health and Safety discovered the insect late Wednesday night.
She says environmental officers were called in to inspect the building, and found no sign of additional bugs. If they had, she says the building would have been closed and pest control called in immediately.
MRD was opened for operations this morning after OHS deemed it safe. Gambin-Walsh says employees were notified as per protocol. If further evidence of bed bugs is identified, the building will be closed until the all-clear is given.
The building is being fumigated tonight, but is expected to reopen tomorrow for regular hours.
