The story about the man known in Newfoundland as “the whale man”, Dr. Jon Lien, is returning to the stage in St. John’s this week for two performances.
“Between Breaths” by Robert Chafe tells the story of Dr. Jon Lien and his work rescuing whales trapped in fishing nets, often risking his own life in doing so.
The book has been brought to the stage a number of times before and this week’s show at the Arts and Culture Centre in St. John’s will feature music from the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra.
In a call to the VOCM Sunday Drive with Darrell Power, author Robert Chafe said they came up with the idea back in 2016 when they did a workshop presentation at MUN’s School of Music.
He says they heard the music and thought how incredible it would be orchestrated with a full symphony. Producer Pat Foran called the NSO and started a conversation that has resulted in this week’s show at the ACC.
The shows will take place on February 14th and 15th at the Arts and Culture Centre in St. John’s at 8:00 p.m..
