DFO enforcement officers noticed a big drop in the number of people salmon fishing on the province’s rivers this year.
The provincial government amended salmon angling regulations in June to address a drastic decline in salmon returns on the province’s rivers.
The season was one fish retention until the in-season review, then went to catch and release, and salmon licences were late going out.
Senior Compliance Officer with DFO, Daryl Walsh says there were noticeably fewer anglers on the rivers this summer. He says Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are primarily catch and retain anglers and when the changes were made, they saw a big drop in numbers.
