A 23-year-old St. John’s man has been sent for a seven day psychiatric assessment by the court after being arrested and charged following a dramatic single vehicle crash in Portugal-Cove St Philip’s last evening.

Jake Dalton was brought into court today wearing scrubs. When he was brought into custody last evening, he was wearing his boxers.

This morning, Dalton was sent for a lunch hour psychiatric assessment. When he returned to court this afternoon, the judge sent him back for a further seven day psychiatric evaluation.

The accident happened on Beachy Cove Road, just south of Bayview Heights. A northbound pickup truck, with a snowplow attached, lost control and rolled over in the ditch. Two utility poles were cracked off completely as a result of the crash.

According to Dalton’s charges, the truck was allegedly stolen from Toyota Plaza on Kenmount Road.

Dalton is facing one count of break and enter with intent, theft of a motor vehicle, mischief, failure to stop, dangerous driving, and three counts of breaching court orders.

He’s due back in court on Monday.

    Earlier Story

A dramatic single-vehicle crash last evening in Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s saw one person taken into custody.

The incident happened on Beachy Cove Road, just south of Bayview Heights. A northbound pickup truck, with a snowplow attached, lost control and rolled over in the ditch. Two utility poles were cracked off completely as a result of the crash.

The RNC says the truck was stolen from a business on Kenmount Road

According to reports from the scene, a man escaped with only minor injuries, walking away from the wreck on his own. Adding to the bizarre nature of the incident was that the driver was apparently not wearing pants, and was taken into custody wearing only his boxers on his lower half.

Witnesses also report the same pickup had been traveling on Thorburn Road at a high rate of speed with the snow plow on the ground. A salter box that had been on the truck was lying in the street on Tucker’s Hill Road, nearly four kilometres away.

Beachy Cove Road was closed for several hours as the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary investigated and while Newfoundland Power crews made repairs to the damaged poles and utility lines. One area resident was displaced with her two small children, as her home was without heat due to the crash.

The man was charged with Break and Entry, Possession of Stolen Property, Flight from Police, Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and breaches of a court order. He’s been held for a court appearance.
