  • VIDEO Murder Charge Dropped Against Man Alleged to Have Killed Home Invader

Murder and gun charges against a Botwood man charged following the death of a man in April of 2016 have been dropped by the court.

Gilbert Budgell was charged following a home invasion at his Botwood residence. It’s alleged the two masked men entered the house and Budgell shot at one of the intruders.

A preliminary hearing was set to begin in Grand Falls-Windsor court today, but the charges against Budgell were instead dropped. Crown Prosecutor Karen O’Reilly spoke to VOCM’s Renell LeGrow to explain what led to this decision:

Budgell’s lawyer Bob Buckingham told reporters outside court today that his client is relieved with the turn of events and was extremely distraught over what had happened.

He says Budgell acted out of fear after two masked men entered his home.

Budgell pleaded guilty earlier this year to drug charges in Grand Falls-Windsor. That came after RCMP seized a quantity of narcotics while executing a search warrant at his home.
