  • Campaign Kick Off ‘Sets the Stage’ for New Theatre in Cow Head

Theatre artists and enthusiasts at the Gros Morne Theatre Festival have much to look forward to after several members of government and the local business community have joined forces to launch a fundraising campaign aimed at taking theatre to the next level.

The Set the Stage Campaign, chaired by former premier Brian Tobin, has lofty goals of improving the thriving summer theatre experience based on the west coast.

He says the campaign will result in the construction of a new theatre facility in the community of Cow Head and he indicates work has already begun on the building.

The federal government pledged $3.7-million to the campaign and the provincial government will kick in an additional $500,000.

Gros Morne National Park attracts over 250,000 tourists to the area annually. Artistic Director with Theatre Newfoundland and Labrador Jeff Pitcher says they have been forced to turn people away due to a lack of space.

He says the theatre movement on the west coast has expanded tremendously over the years, which has made conditions for artists and actors more challenging.

Pitcher says they rehearse in a church, get dressed across the road from the stage, store props in trucks, and there isn’t even a washroom for actors. He says all that is about to change.
