The town of Carbonear has received more than $745,000 dollars for the first phase of its downtown revitalization plan.
Mayor Frank Butt says the downtown revitalization has been a long time coming. Water Street in Carbonear was the commercial hub of the town for most of its history, but saw a shift after the TC Square opened up on the main highway in the late ’70s.
The downtown has seen increased activity in recent years with a number of new businesses being established and the opening of the Stone Jug in the old Rorke premises.
Joint funding announced today by the federal and provincial governments will be used to improve sidewalks, signage, develop Wi-Fi hotspots, paint murals, and improve landscaping and lighting among other things.
Mayor Butt says it’s great news for the town.
