Last year Chase the Ace was all the buzz in Bay de Verde, now many wish it never happened.
While the event was a huge success at raising funds for the Church of the Assumption Roman Catholic parish in Bay de Verde, the fallout has divided the congregation.
Church officials were not available for comment, but people in the community say the way in which the windfall was spent has caused divisions within the parish and the community.
Chase the Ace drew thousands to the small community last year. It resulted in a $730,000 jackpot, and initial estimates had the total raised for much-needed renovations and maintenance at half a million dollars.
A statement of revenue collected by the parish last year shows total indirect income at nearly $2.5-million.
It turns out that some of the money raised was spent on the parish in Northern Bay, a move that drew anger from local parishioners.
Others who have contacted VOCM News say they are not pleased that contracts for repair and maintenance work were issued without going to tender.
The local parish directed VOCM News to the diocese, who in turn directed us back to the parish.
