The MHA for Mount Pearl-Southlands is calling on residents to step up this weekend to help collect food for the local food banks.

Paul Lane says food banks in the area have been under a lot of pressure lately, with the two local food banks seeing demand jump by 30 per cent in the last year.

In response to the shortage, Mount Pearl will be holding a community food drive on Saturday morning beginning at 9:00 a.m. at St. David’s Park.

Lane says they are looking for volunteers to collect food, drivers and people to sort the food at the two food banks as it comes in. Even if people can’t join in, they can leave non-perishable food items on their front steps and volunteers will be by to pick it up.
