The Community Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador is giving a grant of $25,000 to establish an emergency fund for Syrian refugee families in the province.
More than 240 government-assisted refugees from Syria have arrived in the province, which is nearly double the total number of refugees that arrive in the province in a normal year.
The foundation is directing the money to the Association for New Canadians. In turn, that organization will provide Syrian families with interest-free short-term loans to help those who are having trouble in meeting essential living expenses when they first arrive.
Families will have to pay back only 80 per cent of the loan.
