A couple that travelled across Canada in an electric car and trailer say electric cars will soon overtake gas powered cars on the road.

Rolf Oetter and Silke Sommerfeld are originally from Germany but now live in BC, they arrived in St. John’s Sunday evening after leaving Victoria, BC three months ago.

It was the first time an electric car towing a trailer has made it across the country.

When the couple realized the many benefits of electric cars they decided to do a cross-country awareness tour.

Oetter says getting an electric car is expensive now, but it won’t be for long.

He says as more people purchase electric cars the price will drop.

The couple will be at the Signal Hill Visitor Centre tomorrow from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. to speak with the public about their journey and the importance of electric cars.

Oetter says electric cars are coming in a big way.

He says in 15 years car manufacturers that don’t start producing electric cars will be out of business because they’re a dream to drive and the benefits are many.
