Tough economic circumstances over the last year have not had an impact on air traffic at Deer Lake.
Deer Lake Regional Airport is reporting a seven per cent increase in passenger traffic in 2016 and set a new record with more than 360,000 people passing through the terminal.
Deer Lake Regional Airport President and CEO Jamie Schwartz says he’s surprised by the numbers.
He says 2015 ended on a downward trend and they expected to see it continue in 2016 but increasing traffic to and from Muskrat Falls made up for losses in other areas.
Schwartz also credits the tourism industry for the increased air traffic. He says although he’s pleased with the increase, he is staying cautious looking into 2017.
He says they expect the numbers will remain steady but they don’t anticipate the same gains in 2017.
