It’s a notable time for female hockey in the province.

The newly-formed Eastern Junior Women’s Hockey League in St. John’s kicked off on Friday.

The four-team league consists of three junior teams with girls ages 17 to 22: the Blizzard, Universal Corporate Wear and Metro Ice. The other team is the Midget AAA Eastern Icebreakers.

The league kicked off with two games Friday night at Fieldian Gardens.

In a call to the VOCM Friday Night Sports Show with Ben Murphy, the chair of female hockey in the province, Debbie Bouzane says she was happy with the turnout on opening night.

She says a representative from the St. John’s Junior Hockey League said their fan turnout was pretty good for their first night.

Bouzane says they are still looking for players. They expect the league to be bigger and better next year.

She says if anyone wants to join the league they have to contact herself or Denise Fagan. They are working towards a fourth team for next year. As word gets out she expects they will have more players join.

Eastern Junior Women’s Hockey League action will take place every Friday night at Fieldian Gardens.
