ExxonMobil wants to drill nearly three dozen exploratory wells offshore Newfoundland.
The company, which is the lead operator of Hibernia, has submitted the plans to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency. The agency will now consider whether to order an environmental assessment.
ExxonMobil is proposing to drill 35 wells about 250 km from St. John’s within a 12-year period starting in 2018. The drilling would be in areas located in both the Jeanne d’Arc Basin and the Flemish Pass Basin. Public comments are being accepted until October 19.
