The Chair of the Board for the St. John’s Farmers’ Market Cooperative says everyone is hustling to make sure the facility is ready to go come opening day July 21st.
The City of St. John’s and the Cooperative signed a lease agreement for the Community Market on Freshwater Road, celebrating six years of work to bring the vision to reality.
Chair Josh Smee says it’s a dream come true for everyone involved. They started with the market renting a small space, never thinking this could happen. He says it’s long past due and they can see the excitement in the community.
The factility comprises about 14,000 square feet and Smee says the building is accessible. It’s all at ground level, fully wheelchair accessible with automatic doors, gender inclusive bathrooms, a full kitchen and a seating area that sits more than 100 people.
The project was financed through government and community funding agencies. St. John’s contributed $2-million, ACOA gave close to $1.7-million, and just short of $500,000 came from the provincial government’s department of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation. The Farmer’s Market Co-op contributed $100,000 through fundraisers and agencies such as the Community Fund of NL and VOCM Cares.
The St. John’s Community Farmers’ Market is set to open on July 21st.
