The federal government is considering the idea of a limited groundfish fishery. Everything came to a crashing halt in 1992, referred to at the time as Canada`s largest ever single layoff, throwing about 20,000 people out of work.
The industry believes it is now time to resume the fishery in a scaled back manner. Federal Fisheries Minister Dominic LeBlanc won’t commit to it yet, but hopes to put together such an industry sooner rather than later.
He hopes to have some news in a few days on the sentinel, or experimental, cod fishery.
