A well-known retired race horse in this province is dead following a fire that razed a barn and garage in North River early this morning.
Mach the Moment was a 12-year-old gelding with long list of racing wins in his career.
Firefighters from the Bay de Grave Fire Department were called to the scene early this morning. An adjacent home was also damaged but there were no human injuries.
Fire Chief Jim Edmunds, whose uncle owns the property, says they got the call just before 7:00.
He says when they arrived the building was fully engulfed, and there was little they could do to save it, although they did manage to save some of the owner’s tools and equipment.
Edmunds says it was too late to save the horse. He says the owner Gerard Newell tried to save the animal, but realized it was too late.
Firefighters remain on the scene dousing hot spots. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
