  • Fisheries Minister Questions Crab Fishery Closure

Newly appointed provincial Fisheries Minister Gerry Byrne would like to see an extension to the snow crab fishery.

The season is coming to a close for crab fishermen on the Northeast coast, but Byrne would like to see it extended to help harvesters affected by the season’s late start.

Many fishermen couldn’t get out at the beginning of the season due to heavy ice conditions that persisted well into June.

Byrne says he understands the conservation concerns surrounding soft shell and white crab, and says he will work with DFO to find solutions, while still meeting the needs of harvesters.
