  • Former Business Manager Pushes for Union Locals to Remain Independent

The former business manager with the Operating Engineers Local 904 wants the provincial government to bring in legislation preventing the international parent union from seizing operations of locals in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The international seized control of the Operating Engineers in St.John’s early this year. By the time the dust had settled, John Flaherty was out of a job and the international had seized all of their operations and accounts. A hearing by a panel of union officials confirmed the takeover.

Flaherty says Local 904 had about $53 million in bank accounts and $200 million in its pension fund when the parent union took control, citing political in-fighting and poor management.

Flaherty says there are 16 trade unions in the province, and he wants government to act quickly to prevent takeovers of other union locals.
