Former Liberal MP and Senator Bill Rompkey has passed away at the age of 80.
Rompkey first entered politics in 1972 when he was elected as the MP for Grand Falls-White Bay-Labrador.
He was appointed to the Senate in 1995, retiring in 2011.
He was a native of Belleoram on the south coast of the island, but was well known for his passion for Labrador. He represented the region as MP and created scholarly works on the area.
Rompkey passed away in hospital in Ottawa last night.
Former Premier and MP Brian Tobin says it’s a sad day for the province.
Tobin says Rompkey was a man of “incredible integrity” who was passionate about the province as a whole, but also was a unique and strong voice for Labrador in particular.
