A friend of Chantel John, the young woman murdered in Conne River this week, is urging those in toxic or abusive relationships to get out.
A 35-year-old man from St. Jacques has been charged with first degree murder in her death. Kirk Keeping had been in a relationship with John, but as her friend Loretta Keefe says, she had recently ended that relationship. She had been speaking to John a few weeks ago and she appeared happy.
Keefe says John was a friendly, loving person and she’s shocked and devastated by what has happened.
Keefe, who lives in Botwood but has close family ties to Conne River, got to know John very well over the years and they spent a lot of time together.
She says there are always signs when a relationship is no longer safe. Keefe says if someone is trying to control your behaviour, you need to get out. She wants other women to know that they’re not alone and they need to talk to others if there’s something going on.
