Grieg officials are certain there will be no escapes of farmed salmon into the local marine ecosystem with the use of state of the art escape-proof cages.
The company is proposing to develop a major aquaculture operation in Placentia Bay, based out of the Marystown area.
Candice Way, Hatchery Manager at Grieg NL Nurseries, says the Aqualine cages have been in use for years around the world and there have been no escapes reported. She says the cages are escape-proof.
There have been widespread concerns about Grieg’s proposal, with questions being raised about what measures are being put in place to prevent escapes and the spread of disease to wild salmon populations.
