  • Group of Seven Painting, Discovered in St. John’s, Heading to Auction on Toronto

A painting by one of Canada’s greatest painters, discovered recently in St. John’s, will go on auction in Toronto next week.

An oil sketch by A.Y. Jackson, one of the founding members of the Group of Seven, was discovered in St. John’s during a recent art roadshow.

Ungava Bay has an estimated value of $90,000.

Rob Cowley, a Newfoundlander and President of Consignor a company that specializes in Canadian Fine Art, says the piece, discovered in St. John’s in August, is significant.

He says it was painted on a trip Jackson made to the Arctic with famed Canadian scientist and painter Sir Frederick Banting.

The sketch will be featured during Consignor’s Falls Live Auction of Important Canada Art next Tuesday, November 20th at the Gardiner Museum in Toronto.
