The Church by the Sea Heritage Group in Portugal Cove-St. Philips is working to ensure that the 100 year history of the old St. Philip’s Anglican church is not forgotten.
The group fought unsuccessfully to preserve the old church building, which was demolished in 2015.
The debate over the future of the old church divided the community, and at one point resulted in the late-night toppling of the church steeple.
The president of the Church by the Sea Inc Heritage Group, Steve Sharpe, says they’re now working with the Grand Concourse Authority on a story board and presentation panel to outline the church’s history.
He says they will also be collecting funds to help preserve other heritage buildings under threat.
