Gonzaga High School has named gender advocate Gemma Hickey as the 2018 Alumnus of the Year.
Hickey was hailed as a champion of the LGBT community after they became the first person in Canada to have a non-binary birth certificate.
They also created the Pathway Foundation in 2013 to support survivors of clergy abuse and raised money by walking more than 900 kilometres across the province in 2015.
In 2016, Hickey was named a champion of Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights.
This week Hickey was awarded Alumnus of the Year from their former Gonzaga High School.
