  • Hidden Piece of St. John’s Jewish History Saved from the Dump

A special piece of St. John’s history was revealed yesterday during renovations to the Subway restaurant on Water Street.

Hidden underneath the Subway logo was a Lewis Ferman and Company sign.

Folklorist, Dale Jarvis says the history behind the family who owned the women’s clothing store is quite remarkable. He says Lewis and his soon to be wife, Grunia were a Jewish family from Poland who became part of the Jewish Resistance.

Jarvis and a fellow folklorist ran down to the Subway when they heard the old sign was getting cut up, and they were able to salvage the pieces with the help of a worker before they went to the dump. He says that it is nice to get to tell some of these unknown stories.

He says that we sometimes don’t get to hear these unknown, personal stories.

Jarvis would like to see a plaque to commemorate Lewis and Grunia placed inside Subway.
