  • Hundreds Gather to Mark Anniversary of Ocean Ranger Disaster

Hundreds gathered to remember the tragic sinking of the Ocean Ranger this morning. The annual memorial service marks the 35th anniversary of the disaster and took place at St. Pius X parish.

The emotional ceremony is hosted by Gonzaga High school each year, as a tribute to five former students who were killed when rig went down in the early morning hours of February 15, 1982. All 84 crew members on board were lost.

An American woman who lost her partner in the Ocean Ranger disaster travelled to Newfoundland with her three children for the first time since the disaster to attend today’s memorial service.

Martine Kubalback of New England lost her husband Tom Blevens on that fateful day 35 years ago.

She says she decided to come to Newfoundland to see the place where he was on his last Valentine’s. 35 years later and the emotions are still raw.

She says all she could think about was how cold it must have been for him. She says coming to Newfoundland after all these years and to be with people who understand what she went through is helping her come to terms with the tragedy.

This week’s memorial had to be postponed due to a winter storm.
