Joel Thomas Hynes has won one of the country’s richest literary prizes. The award was presented at Government House in St. John’s this afternoon.
Hynes claimed the 2017 BMO Winterset award for his book, “We’ll All Be Burnt In Our Beds Some Night.”
The novel is one of 31 works by Newfoundland and Labrador authors submitted by publishing companies across the country. The award honours the late Sandra Fraser Gwyn, a decorated author, social historian and promoter of the province at the national level.
The award comes with a cash prize valued at $12,500 while runners up, Bridget Canning and Wayne Johnston, receive $3,000 each.
Hynes says he was totally taken off guard when he was announced the winner.
Hynes says he was completely shocked to receive the honour and didn’t prepare any thanks in advance. He says he was up against two fantastic authors and he admits he was genuinely rooting for all nominees.
