A professor of Outdoor Recreation at Memorial University’s School of Human Kinetics and Recreation says it is important to get kids moving but more importantly, moving outside.
T.A Loeffler says in Slovenia there are 22 outdoor residential centre’s for their students. She says it’s a federal law that every student gets to go to a residential outdoor program at least three times before grade 8, but many schools go every year.
She says research shows that when kids are able to be outdoors, in-school and outside of school activities, they are much more active.
She says her number one recommendation is to figure out how to get everyone moving outside both within school and outside of school. We have had a tradition of outdoor activity in Newfoundland and Labrador like going fishing or going for a walk.
Loeffler says we need to work within our reach to get butts off of couches.
She says we have to work within our culture and weather to sort out how we can support people in getting off the couch and getting outside to do something.
