The Labrador-West Health Center is officially the first Baby-Friendly Hospital in Atlantic Canada.
The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) was launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF in 1991. It’s a global initiative to implement practices that protect, promote and support breastfeeding.
Confirmation was received on July 12th, following an assessment by the Breastfeeding Committee for Canada Baby-Friendly Assessment Team in June.
During the assessment, observations were completed in all areas of the facility and over 50 interviews with staff, families and community partners were completed.
Regional Director of Inter-Professional Practice, Colleen Rixon says this achievement is not only a testament to a commitment to improving health outcomes in the region, but it has also confirmed that families feel supported throughout their care.
Labrador-Grenfell Health began its commitment working towards a Baby-Friendly designation in 2014 and an official public celebration will take place in the upcoming months at the Lab-West Health Centre.
