A national organization is happy to see the Federal Government declare the Laurentian Channel as Canada’s newest Marine Protected Area.
The Canadian Park’s and Wilderness Society had been working to protect the ecosystem for over nine years.
Oil and Gas activities are now prohibited in the area. CPAWS says the new MPA brings Canada’s protected oceans up to 8.27 per cent; the goal is to reach 10 per cent.
The Laurentian Channel, located off the southwest coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, covers 11,580 square kilometres. The area has a rich biodiversity and is home to many whales, fish and rare species like porbeagle sharks and leatherback turtles.
