The contribution of artists in Newfoundland and Labrador is being recognized in new provincial legislation.
Culture Minister Christopher Mitchelmore announced a new Status of the Artist Legislation at the Arts and Culture Centre in St. John’s this morning.
The Status of the Artist Act was drafted following consultation with representatives of a number of arts groups and some 256 professional artists.
Mitchelmore says the legislation will help raise the standards of government support for the arts.
He says the legislation will help develop written contracts for professional artists including work descriptions, terms of payment, dispute resolution mechanisms and rights agreements.
Mitchelmore says it will bring consistency to pay scale agreements and will help improve working conditions for artists across the province.
