A Ramea couple is assessing the damage after their home was struck by lightning this morning.

There had been thunder and lightning in Ramea most of the night. Shannon Rose said his family was up around 7:00, preparing to leave Ramea on the morning ferry. Suddenly there was a loud bang, and it felt like their home was coming off its foundation.

Rose said he found the patio door window was smashed, the door frame bent out of shape, a hole in the exterior siding and a smell of charred wood. He said they went outside and called the fire department. There was no fire. They’re currently awaiting insurance adjusters to determine extent of the damage. Luckily no one was injured.

Most Intense Storm in 40 Years

According to Mayor Clyde Dominie it was the most intense storm to hit the island in more than 40 years.

Dominie says close to a dozen large flat screens TVs were destroyed, and electronics at the island’s Coast Guard station were extensively damaged.

Luckily, there were no personal injuries. He expects damage will run into the thousands of dollars.
