Two trailblazing women working in St John’s made history last night when they became the first female inductees into the Longshoremen’s Protective Union.
Friends, family, and several public officials were on hand at the Benevolent Irish Society for the ceremony.
Paula Snelgrove and Michelle Follett are the first woman to join the LSPU in its expansive 115 year history.
Follett acknowledges the support she has received over the past seven years, as she pushed toward the goal of membership. She and Snelgrove are the only female Longshore-women currently working at the St. John’s site.
Follett says she knew they would get in because she wasn’t going to give up. She says it was a a lot of blood sweat and tears but they received a lot of support from president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour, Mary Shortall along the way.
