A man from Benton is hoping to reunite a Paradise family with a long-lost piece of their past.
Kevin Keats was doing some prospecting in the Baie Verte area two years ago with a colleague who came across a pile of old, discarded lumber. His friend had plans to take the wood home for kindling, until they had a closer look. That’s when Keats realized that one of the pieces was actually a sign belonging to an old business.
He convinced his friend to let him have it, so he cleaned it up and discovered the name C Bowers.
Through a post to the Newfoundland History Buffs Facebook page, he discovered it belonged to Claude Bowers, a mercantile business in Nipper’s Harbour that was operating in the 1930s.
He says he eventually got in touch with Bower’s grandson, Steadman, whose 87-year-old father happens to be working on a book about his father’s store and growing up in rural Newfoundland.
Keats says he’s restoring the sign and hopes to carry it out to the family in the not-too-distant future.
