  • Michael Not Running in 2019 Election

After 13 years representing the District of St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi in the House of Assembly, Lorraine Michael is not seeking re-election in 2019.

It was an emotional announcement at the Holiday Inn, in St. John’s this morning where newly acclaimed NDP leader, Alison Coffin and longtime MHA Lorraine Michael announced their intentions for the 2019 Provincial Election.

Michael is stepping aside to allow Coffin to run in the District of St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi.

Michael says one of the most important things for the NL NDP is to have their Leader elected to the House of Assembly.

She says she wants to provide Coffin with the best opportunity to be elected, although she won’t be going away. Michael says she’s all energetic and will still be working behind the scenes.

Leader Alison Coffin says she is humbled by the Party’s decision and looks forward to working with Lorraine to meet the people of the District to discuss their ideas and concerns.

Michael says the best place to get their leader elected is in the stronghold of their party and she felt it was necessary to step aside as a party needs to stand by the party. She says the party agrees that it is important for Allison Coffin to have a seat in the House.

St. John’s Deputy Mayor Sheilagh O’Leary had announced intentions to run for the NDP in that district. Coffin says they have spoken extensively with O’Leary.

They have invited her to join their team for a successful slate of candidates.

Coffin suggested that O’Leary is the best person to ask as to her intentions. VOCM News has reached out to the St. John’s Deputy Mayor.
