A young woman from Corner Brook who had been reported missing says she has no intentions of returning to the province.
21-year-old Kayla Reid, reported missing on March 3rd, has been located living in Costa Rica with a group that calls themselves, ‘The Etherians’. The group is led by an American man named Eglio Bishop, who the group calls ‘Nature Boy’. The group follows a new-age belief system which involves living in tents, and living on a fruit based diet.
In a live stream video posted on Facebook over the weekend, Reid addressed family in Corner Brook, saying she would not be returning to Newfoundland. Several family members sent their love and pleaded for her return in the comment section. Family members are concerned about her well being and know very little about her current living situation.
The video gathered over 50,000 views and has since been removed. VOCM is in contact with members of the Reid family and hopes to learn more in the coming days.
Legally, Little Can be Done: Mark Gruchy
A St. John’s lawyer says there is very little a family can do when an adult chooses to the leave the country.
Mark Gruchy was responding to the case surrounding 21-year-old Kayla Reid of Corner Brook.
Gruchy says while legally, there’s little that can be done to bring Reid back, there is some political pressure that can be brought to bear on Costa Rica, which relies heavily on its tourism industry.
He says Costa Rica probably doesn’t want to be associated with harbouring “cults.”
Gruchy says in many cases, people in those type of situations will come back on their own.
