Ambulance operators and paramedics with Moore’s Ambulance service are shocked with the action taken by government in cancelling the contract with the company.
It leaves just over 20 members of the Operating Engineers Local 904 without work come April 6th.
The business agent with the Union, Charlie Smallwood, says despite the fact that the owner failed to sign a collective agreement ratified by union members in November, they were blindsided by the latest turn of events.
He says his members are owed $150,000 in retroactive pay and want to know when they’ll get paid, but Minister Haggie indicated yesterday that he’s not the employer.
Smallwood says the union will do whatever it can to get that retro pay.
He has spoken with government to see if it can be put in trust for the workers. It can’t go in trust to the Operating Engineers, but it can go in trust to Moore’s and be used only for retroactive wages – nothing else.
