A dramatic series of events played out yesterday on an otherwise quiet Mount Pearl street.
One man is in custody and a house is heavily damaged following a lengthy police standoff and fire at a home on Jersey Avenue in Mount Pearl yesterday.
Justin Wiseman, a man well-known to police, was arrested yesterday evening following a seven-hour standoff with police.
Armed officers surrounded the home as police negotiated with Wiseman, who was inside. The street was closed to traffic while the police operation was underway.
He was arrested by police around 7:00 p.m, but just over two hours later, the St. John’s Regional Fire Department was called to the same home after fire erupted inside.
There were no injuries as a result of either incident, but a cat inside the home was treated by firefighters at the scene.
Platoon Chief Rick Mackey says the fire was extensive, but crews had the fire under control in about an hour.
Justin Wiseman is scheduled to appear in court today. He was previously charged with weapons offences in connection with another standoff on Springdale Street in May 2013, and was one of a group of people charged in connection with a riot in the chapel of Her Majesty’s Penitentiary in 2014.
