Mount Pearl residents should be prepared for some big changes in the way recycling is carried out in the coming year.
The city is introducing a mandatory clear garbage bag program. Mayor Randy Simms says it’s similar to that currently in use in central Newfoundland, and allows staff to keep tabs on what’s being recycled and what’s ending up in the landfill.
Simms says recycling rates in the city are dropping and he thinks their container garbage program is partly to blame.
He says a drop in recycling was the unintended result of introducing the container garbage system.
