NAPE is standing behind its correctional officers in the wake of four deaths in the province’s correctional facilities in less than a year.
The minister of justice has hired former RNC Superintendent Marlene Jesso to look at the deaths of Samantha Piercey and Skye Martin at the Correctional Centre for Women in Clarenville, and the deaths of Douglas Neary and Chris Sutton at HMP.
Nape President Jerry Earle represents the correctional officers. He says correctional officers are like any front-line workers, and the deaths have hit them hard.
He says they’re often not included in policy development, and they’re voices are often not heard. Earle says correctional officers have to be listened to.
