The 2018 NDP Leadership Convention wrapped up in St. John’s today and it was St. John’s Centre MHA Gerry Rogers who came out on top as the new leader.
Both Rogers and MUN economist Alison Coffin were gunning for the top role.
Former NDP leader Earle McCurdy stepped down as leader in September saying he felt it was the best time for him, his family and the party to step down now.
Federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh was present and addressed the convention this afternoon, saying there was no reason Canada could not have universally accessible pharmacare with its current economy.
Both leadership candidates delivered impassioned speeches leading into the final round of voting this afternoon. When all was said and done, Rogers won with 67 per cent of the vote.
Rogers will now assume the role of NDP leader leading into the 2019 general election.
