The CRTC has ruled that Newfoundland and Labrador will not be adopting a second area code just yet.
Last year, the CRTC announced plans to implement a new 879 area code in this province, as phone numbers serviced by the existing 709 area code were projected to be exhausted by 2019. Once introduced, phone calls within the province would require 10 digits to be dialed.
Following a review of the province’s population and changes in the market share, the Canadian Numbering Association pushed back the projected exhaustion date to 2024. In response, Bell Canada requested the implementation date for the new area code to be deferred. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador stated it was not opposed to Bell Canada’s request.
Upon review, the CRTC ruled that the new area code should be delayed indefinitely.
The national numbering association will monitor changes in the forecast to find the best approach before a new implementation date is released
