The province’s Green Economy Conference, called Newleef, is underway at the Holiday Inn in St. John’s today and tomorrow with some extremely timely topics on the agenda.
Jonas Roberts of Amec Foster Wheeler was part of a panel discussion addressing the ethical obligation of engineers when facing climate change.
He says more and more engineers are building with extreme weather in mind. Roberts says many turn to the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL) for codes and standards however the incorporating impact of climate change into a design or build is not the industry standard.
Roberts is optimistic about moving toward better preventative measures but admits it will always be a challenge for engineers to keep up with intensifying weather.
