Two large holes in pipes at the Bay d’Espoir plant are being investigated by NL Hydro.
One of the penstocks, the large brown pipes that take water from the reservoir to the hydroelectric plant, was discovered to have a leak back in May. The pipe – which was installed with the plant in the 1960s – was found to have a faulty weld, which caused the leak. Last month, a similar leak was found in the same location.
Hydro has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the issue and ensure the reliability of the pipe as winter approaches.
It’s unclear at this time when the pipes will be repaired. Hydro aims to have the pipe ready for service before winter.
