The President of the Nunatsiavut Government is vowing that flooding of the Muskrat Falls reservoir will not be permitted until full clearing of the affected land is carried out.
Johannes Lampe addressed a protest outside Environment Minister Perry Trimper’s Happy Valley-Goose Bay office yesterday.
A similar protest also took place at the Nain airstrip.
The Nunatsiavut Government is not at all pleased with government’s refusal to clear all land to help prevent downstream methylmercury contamination once the reservoir is flooded.
Lampe accused Minister Trimper of “cherry picking” information from the Harvard studies commissioned by the Nunatsiavut Government. Government says most, but not all vegetation will be cleared from the site and montioring for downstream methylmercury will be carried out with bans on hunting and fishing put in place if, and when necessary.
